Does grace expire? It will be quick to answer the question; many will scream no, never…the grace of God is forever. Yes it is true. The bible says “…My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinth 12:9). Now I will tell you a story and maybe it will answer the question if grace expires or not.
It is about Dayo and Folorunsho. Dayo and Folorunsho were cousins. Folorunsho’s parents died in a ghastly motor accident while he was 5 years old. Dayo is the only child of his parents. Dayo’s mother is the younger sister of Folorunsho’s mother. So they took Folorunsho as their son. Dayo and Folorunsho became more than cousins, they became brothers. They grew up and did everything together. They were close friends till they got into secondary school and entered the boarding school.
In the boarding school, they changed from the good children they were. They started learning so many bad habits including drinking and smoking at an early age in JSS2 (Junior Secondary School2). One day they were both going back to their hostel when they heard someone preaching in the classroom. Folorunsho went to listen to the preacher while Dayo refused and went to the hostel. Folorunsho ended up giving his life to Christ and changing his ways but Dayo continued in his sinful life. Their friendship could no longer be as it used to be, as Folorunsho now wanted the things of God and Dayo, still the pleasures of life. The good thing about Dayo was that he was a genius. He was one of the most brilliant people that have ever lived. While in JSS3 (Junior Secondary School3), he taught SSS2 (Senior Secondary School2) students Mathematics and Further Mathematics. He was as brilliant as that. His parents were rich and they lavished money on him. This kind of life continued until they left the secondary school. Dayo was the best student in the school and took 7 out of the 8 awards during their sent forth and award night. Folorunsho barely made his WAEC and they got to different universities.
Folorunsho went to the University of Ibadan while Dayo went the University of Lagos. Dayo’s life became more wayward but he was still very brilliant. He had the cars, the girls, almost everything! He represented his University in so many examinations and always came out the best. He was also good with the ladies. He was born on February 14 (St Valentine’s Day), and so he always believed that love was his style. He changed girls as often as he wanted. He read Accounting and graduated with a First Class degree. He was the overall best graduating student (BGS) of the University of Lagos during his convocation. Funny enough, he was just 20 years old. Folorunsho also graduated that year with a Second class upper (two one) degree and enrolled for his master’s degree while Dayo took up a job in a bank in Lagos-Lion gate Bank. Because he could do everything so well, he could organize things and make things happen, he was loved by everyone and was the ladies’ delight.
Just in his first year of working in the bank, the bank made twice the profit they made in the previous two years. His promotion was so rapid that by the age of 24, Dayo became the youngest manager in the bank. Folorunsho would always come during holidays and preach to Dayo, but Dayo would tell him “I am enjoying my life, leave me alone, what can Jesus offer me, I have everything, I am far better than you that call yourself a Christian, What can you show me that you have received from Jesus and that He can give to me? Maybe, Jesus even loves me more than you as he blesses me more than you”. Folorunsho tried his best but Dayo refused to accept Jesus. Grace was sufficient for him and he flourished in everything he did. All these continued, sweet life for him till December that year when Dayo and Folorunsho went back to spend the new year with their parents.
On the New Year eve; everybody was going to church to break the New Year in the House of God and Folorunsho told Dayo “Let’s go to the crossover night in church”. But Dayo told Folorunsho that “there is a way I enter my New Year, my girlfriend will come around and we will have sex just before the New Year, so that by the New Year, I will be at my orgasm. Folorunsho was sad, but that was Dayo for you. True to his word, his girlfriend came around and while people were in the church shouting “Praise the Lord, Happy New year”, shooting fireworks, Dayo was enjoying sinful pleasure with his girlfriend. It was his style. The New Year day passed and nothing happened. Grace was still sufficient for Dayo.
In the New Year, Dayo was going to be 25- Silver Jubilee. It will be his 25 birthday- valentine day, a young bank manager, who had almost everything, he has moved into his beautiful duplex, all to himself. He was not even married. Dayo’s life was what many Christians and unbelievers will envy. A lot of preparations were going on for his birthday celebration. He took one of the best halls in Lagos. People, friends and companies were contributing to and sponsoring the birthday; top artists were invited. It was going to be the talk of the town. 25 years of a genius who had everything.
On the 10 of February-3 days to his birthday, Dayo went clubbing as usual with his most trusted friends. It was on a Sunday. After clubbing, he drove back home drunk and slept peacefully with joy. The next day at work-Monday, Dayo was not there. People thought maybe it was because of his birthday. They called his line, it rang but nobody picked. Many thought he had lost his phone. Tuesday came but he was still not at work. They got worried, called his parents but they said they have not seen Dayo. They called his friend Folorunsho who also said he had not heard from him.
On Wednesday 13 of February, a day to the birthday, Folorunsho got worried and came to the bank but Dayo was not still at work. Folorunsho went with his friend and some of Dayo’s fellow workers from the bank to Dayo’s house. When they got to his house, the gate was locked and they jumped in through the fence. When they got to the door, it was open and they went into the house. As they entered, they saw alcohol in the parlor. “Dayo, Dayo…” they shouted but no one responded. They noticed that something foul, smelt. It was choking and stinking. Maybe a rat has died, they thought. They went upstairs, opened Dayo’s bed room and were shocked to find that Dayo’s body was already decomposing with worms eating his flesh. He has died 4 days ago. He had vomited so much on top of the bed while struggling for breath as he died.
Later, the autopsy report from the pathologist revealed that Dayo was poisoned on that Sunday night that he went out with his most trusted friends and pals because of envy. February 14 came, people waited for the genius at 25 to celebrate with him; but he was nowhere to be found. Do you think his grace expired? They told him about Jesus but he rejected Him because he had everything. What shall it profit you if you gain the whole world like Dayo and suffer the loss of your soul? There is a way that seems right unto a man but the end is the way of death. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Today, He is calling you; you that think you have everything in this life. Dayo had everything except Jesus and suffered the loss of his soul. He thought he would have it his way and that women was the end of the world but even the people he trusted most were the ones that killed him out of jealousy.
I wish Dayo will come back to this life, I am sure he will follow a different path knowing that vanity upon vanity, all is vanity. How am I sure, you will not end up like Dayo. Today wherever you are, what if your own grace expires today? If I were you, I would think well and follow the right way, and the right way is Jesus. You can have a blissful life here on earth and make it to heaven. REMEMBER DAYO; Let him that has ear, let him hear (Rev3; 6). If you want to accept Jesus as you Lord and Saviour say this prayer “Lord Jesus have mercy upon me and forgive me of my sins, wash me clean with your blood, wipe my name out from the book of death and write my name in the book of life, I believe that you died for me and I accept you today as my Lord and personal Saviour, thank you for saving me, in Jesus name”. If you prayed this prayer you are now saved. God bless you.
