I write this story which was popularly told I by my friend (Brother James the story teller), with mixed feelings as the memory of this great event comes to my mind. This is a true life story of what happened in the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, which I witnessed years ago as a Mandelite in school. About 5% fiction was however added to suit its purpose. It is the story of the black matric.
Hmm…You may wonder why I am heavy but it brings back so much memory of what I am about to tell you. Oh how I wish that this young generation would learn from this; how I wish that God could turn back the hands of time, for that Tuesday in the University of Port Harcourt to be replayed; maybe many would have taken a different route. The matriculation day of 2008 in the University of Port-Harcourt was a day that will leave lasting memories in the hearts of many. It was a day that the blood of some students was shed both on campus and outside the campus leaving many others wounded and also led to the declaration of some students “wanted”.
I will not tell the whole story of the entire matric because I don’t know all that happened that day and why they happened but I will tell you the events about three persons: Caro, Obinna and Tolu. The Saturday before the matric, James’ fellowship-the Redeemed Christian Fellowship (RCF) had evangelism in the evening, and they went to talk to people about Jesus in the hostels. As James was going into one of the hostels, at the entrance was a young man putting on a Man U FC jersey doing business in front of the hostel and another guy putting on a Chelsea FC jersey sitting by his side with a girl making some purchase. James introduced himself to the three of them. The name of the girl was Tolu, the two young men were Obinna and Caro. He got talking with them about Man U and Chelsea Fc and told them that they were good fans of their clubs but he wished they would be fans to one club he knew. “Which club is that” they asked in anticipation and he said “Jesus United”. Immediately, the girl Tolu hissed and said “all these church people please excuse me” she turned and walked away. She was walking to the girl’s hostel. She rejected the message of Jesus. So James started talking to Caro and Obinna. He told them about himself and they also told him about themselves. Caro was a child of a very poor woman and was doing the business in order to sustain himself in school. Obinna on the other hand came from a comfortable home. He told them about Jesus. Obinna laughed and said “I am still very young; I am just 15 years old. There is plenty of time to do all these religious things, but not now. I’m too young to start behaving like these born again people. There is a lot to flex in this school. I just came in, may be in my final year, I will give my life to Jesus. So James turned to Caro and said, “don’t you think you need Jesus”. Caro replied “abeg, abeg come dey go, you dey spoil my business, my customer don dey run now because of you, I don’t need Jesus”. He turned his chair and backed James. James told God to open their eyes that they may know Him but little did he know what was ahead of them.
Later on, he got to know that they were freshers (year one students). As James walked to the Abuja campus Park on Monday, he saw Obinna at the bar behind the Park with a group of year one students drinking. It was the eve to their matriculation. Tuesday was the day of matriculation. They were all dressed beautifully, very happy as friends and families were trooping to school. The Abuja campus of the University was so filled with celebrants that cars were not allowed to get to the University Park. There were plenty to eat and drink. You can trust my then fellow mandelites; they will always say “we no dey carry last”. Fellowship brethren were in different stands merrying and rejoicing. The matriculation eve was Brother James fellowship day. As he was walking down to fellowship, a party was being held in front of Nelson Mandella hostel (block B) and he recognized Caro and Obinna dancing and rocking with fellow year one girls. They had a bottle of alcohol each in their hand, laughing and happy. Kegites were also having their own party opposite the hostel, beating drums and gyrating. Meanwhile, James later got to know about Tolu. She was a beautiful girl brought up in the ways of the Lord. She too was a fresher who entered school through the Basic (predegree) programme. She got involved with a guy, started dating and little by little, she fell off the faith. She promised her guy that on her matriculation day, she would give him her virginity as a matriculation gift. So the guy looked up to that day. That same day, her boyfriend came to her hostel (NUH BLOCK A) to take her to his place at Aluu. So while James was heading to fellowship and Caro and Obinna were dancing in the party, Tolu and her boyfriend were heading to his house.
Fellowship held, the brethren thanked God and celebrated but as fellowship just closed, James noticed people running towards the fellowship venue. By the time brethren went outside to see what was happening, they were told that there had been shootings in and around the school. As the fellowship generator was switched off, they started hearing gunshots, very powerful high velocity gun shots. They were wondering how gunmen got into the University with all the security on ground. They were all afraid and hid for safety. I remember vividly chatting with my friends in Mandella Block C at the topmost floor, when some guys arrived at the front of Mandella block B and started shooting sporadically. At first we were all clapping thinking it was the then Man O War boys. But no, it was a serious business of gun battle and we had to hide in our rooms for safety. The generator man popularly known as “operator” switched off the school generator and the shooting continued. Suddenly there was about 5 minutes of silence, after which shouting and crying were heard downstairs in front of Mandella block B. People started coming out from their hiding places and gathered around the front of mandella block B.
By the time we came down, two newly matriculated students were lying in the pool of their blood. By the time UPTH ambulance arrived, one of them had already passed on. Brother James has also rushed out from his fellowship venue to see what was happening. Brother James went close to see who they were, and to his greatest surprise, the first person they carried was fair Obinna, he was already dead. This was the same boy he spoke to on Saturday. He turned to the other one and it was Caro, still breathing shallowly. How did this happen? He looked for another casualty but there was none. Why must it be just two of them? They were the same people he spoke to on Saturday and they said they did not need Jesus, thinking that they had the whole world ahead of them. Little did they know what was ahead of them.
To make matters worse, as Brother James was still weeping, some girls were running to their hostel crying and James recognised one of them as his sister in fellowship and he asked her what was happening. She said her roommate Tolu was shot dead in Aluu. Brother James asked if she lives in Aluu, but she said no, and that Tolu stays in the hostel (NUH BLOCK A) but went to see her boyfriend in Aluu, but on her way back with her boyfriend in a bike, she was hit by stray bullets from some gunmen in Aluu at the same time it was happening inside the school. She and her boyfriend died in the incident. Yes other people lost their lives with some wounded within and outside the campus to this black matric, but why was it that the three people that Brother James preached to on Saturday were all involved. The black matric was a day that started so well, their parents came and celebrated with them and went back, only to hear some hours later that they were no more, that same evening of their ‘happiest’ day in the university. The matric that began so well became the BLACK MATRIC. Thank God, at least Caro survived after a protracted management in UPTH, but Tolu and Obinna never had that chance. A young lady and a young man that would have been prominent people in life died for nothing. What was the difference? They decided to have it their way. They thought that grace was still sufficient. Their last chance was when Brother James was preaching to them on Saturday. That was the end of their grace. How I wish they surrendered to the Lord Jesus, I believe their lives would have turned around. They missed their last chance and their grace expired.
What if your grace expires today? You may scream “God forbid” but I tell you this may be your last chance. What if this is your last message. Everybody has a different measure of grace. For Caro, there was still grace but for Obinna and Tolu, their grace had expired. Today, Jesus is calling you. It doesn’t matter how dirty you are. It doesn’t matter how messed up your life may be. It doesn’t matter if the whole world has rejected you. He is ready to change your life. He is asking you to come to Him. This story should be a lesson to you today. Accept Jesus today. Please accept Him. I don’t want to tell your story. Are you a backslider like Tolu, today is your day of salvation! If you want to accept Jesus as you Lord and Saviour say this prayer “Lord Jesus have mercy upon me and forgive me of my sins, wash me clean with your blood, wipe my name out from the book of death and write my name in the book of life, I believe that you died for me and I accept you today as my Lord and personal Saviour, thank you for saving me, in Jesus name”.
